What is your favorite thing about Steampunk? I like the mix of Victorian clothing with lace and ruffles and the harsh lines of metals and machines. Gears and machines are great too – but definitely not the only interesting thing about steampunk
what’s your favorite steampunk book or writer? I’ve had the audiobook Boneshaker by Cheri Priest and enjoyed it a lot… so I got another book from her now, it’s called Dreadnought – interesting so far
cogs, gears etc I like them functional, but don’t mind when they are purely there for aesthetic causes
What are your feelings on receiving an altered book? I’d love that – and if it was functional in some way that would be even better
Where would you carry your gun? If at all on my thigh or on the small of my back, depending on my overall outfit. And I guess I’d for sure have some hidden knife – but nothing between the girls, they are not big enough to hide a weapon

Do you wear jewelery? If so, what kind? Any metal allergies? I wear earrings, necklaces and bracelets, sometimes rings, but they tend to drive me crazy after a while. I have metal allergies to almost everything, but nothing extreme, so I can wear jewelry of any kind if I don’t wear it for too long. Necklaces probably better have a leather or fabric part around the neck and just a metal pendant or so… but for a day or so even a metal chain should work just fine
Do you like cephalopods? With or without monacles/mustaches/top hats? like them, but without any extras
Do you like the brown/bronze/brass color scheme, or is it overdone? like it, but would love to see some colour thrown in. Prefer rich colours, jewel tones
How or when did you become interested in Steampunk? Hard to say… I always liked the look of it, ever since I first encountered clothing and steampunk items online. It probably helps that I’m a goth girl and already loved the Victorian clothes and corsets
What music within the genre do you like? I’m actually not sure what counts as “music within the genre” – but in general I prefer goth rock and metal, music made with real instruments, not computers. I don’t like to limit myself to those though, I’m always interested in getting to know new bands and new music genres
If your spoiler makes you a wearable steampunk item, would you be more interested in a costume piece or something you could wear in more mundane circumstances? both… I don’t really have a steampunk costume yet, but think about something like an airpirate – kind of functional clothes, lots of pockets, places to hide weapons and things to smuggle… if in doubt, ask again
What is your favored mode of transport? Dirigible, submarine, railless train, Steam Man of the Plains? Dirigible or train
Are you a spinner? Would you like spinnable fiber? Yes, but please without wool in it, I’m allergic

Do you drink tea? And if so, what forms? Bags, loose, iced, decaf only? I love tea in all varieties – even decaf when I want a cuppa close to bedtime. Bags or loose doesn’t matter, it can be flavoured – though I’d prefer natural flavours over synthetic ones. And no green tea please for me
Are you more of a Wild-West coffee drinker? Again, what’s the method of your perfred poison? I like coffee as well, but don’t have a grinder so it has to be ground. No instant please, unless it’s some kind of cappucino or otherwise flavoured.

for those that spin or would like to…. drop spindles? yay or nay?yes, only have one that works properly, the other two are just annoying. Will never buy a cheap spindle again

would you like to receive petticoat/bloomers/underskirt type paraphernalia? oh yes… my sewing skills are not that good, I might be able to do bloomers or an underskirt, but definitely not a petticoat – and a costume has to be complete, with matching undergarments, I either do something right or not at all.
Do you like graphic novels? Yes, but it depends on the style of the artist
Do you have any ‘Steampunk’ graphic novels? no, can’t afford those I want at the moment
is an aviator scarf cool bamboo so it drapes and shines like silk or warm soft wool so it actually keeps you warm bamboo – at least for me, couldn’t wear wool
is there any military insignia/war memorabilia that you do NOT want included in your gifties? Anything you do want? I’m right there with everyone, NO Axis things… at least not as long as they have any recognizable insignia on them. And least of all I want the GERMAN WWII things. Not a chapter in the history of my country that I want to include in my cosplay. I guess in general I’d prefer things before WWII
Hair Toys – yeay or nay? sure… my hair is long, so I can use a variety of things. But it needs to be something that stays even in thin, slippery hair – I can’t put my hair up with hair sticks for example
Alot of folks have mentioned bags – project bags? Messinger bags? Medic bags? Yummy guys to deliver your next russack? What’s your need? Can never have enough bags… a messenger bag, medic bag, satchel, rucksack would be best, but as I said, can never have enough bags of various sizes. Perhaps something small to go on a belt… And I wouldn’t say no to the yummy guy either
shawl pins, yes or no? What style do you like? I love shawls and shawl pins… have no preferred style, have used everything from simple sticks to brooches and penannular brooches from my medieval reenactment
capes I do like the look of them, but am not sure I’d actually wear it – unless it was part of a costume
hats like hats, but please full size ones, not the tiny ones that are so popular in the goth scene

Do you like steampunk/antique/neo-voctorian things for your house? sure, but I don’t have much space to put decorations on… and it needs to be safe for a rather wild 6 year old boy who steals everything he finds interesting glares at his bedroom where my knit sonic screwdriver and my knit stake have vanished But something like a cushion or something to put onto the walls would be perfect

Buttons: Matching or mismatched? I’m right there with you, when they are mismatched they still should have colour or pattern or something in common to make them kind of go together

How do you feel about crafted toys? as long as it is not easily breakable – I do have a rather wild 6 year old boy who will borroweverything that looks like a toy. So knit or crochet is fine, everything else only if it’s sturdy
Shawls, wraps? Bulky, lacy, elegant, practical? What say you? yes to all of them… as part of my costume a small-ish shawlette might be great, something to keep warm that doesn’t get in the way. But I love lacy shawls and wraps as well, they all would be worn
favorite flower to look at? Sunflower, rose, poppies
would you like a steampunky cover for an electronic device? (kindle, laptop, cellphone etc)sure, for my netbook (measurements will be added) or cell phone would be great
What crafts don’t you do yourself? I’ve tried almost everything except metalwork or pottery – not that I’m good at everything, though. I can’t draw or paint, sometimes I think my 6 year old is better at it than I am. I don’t make jewellery, but in theory I could and have a lot of the necessary equipment at home. As far as knitting goes, I’m not good at colour work. I can spin with my hand spindle, but am not that good at it yet – and don’t have enough time, so hand spun yarn would be great. Due to a lack of space I don’t have a loom and don’t weave – except for tablet weaving. I do sew, knit, crochet, dye yarn, dabble in using polymer clay most regularly. Hope that answered the question, if not, just ask again.
Edit: forgot to mention, even though I can do embroidery, I hate it and try to avoid it like the plague
Bugs and rodents as long as it’s not the real live one, I don’t have problems with them. Pictures or handmade animals are perfectly fine with me – and I actually kind of like spiders, beetles, butterflies and dragonflies

Tell me of yarn you like Favorite weights? Fibers? Colors? fingering weight without sheep would be great – or any other weight for that matter. I love alpaca, it’s so soft and warm, but cotton and cotton blends or other plant fibers are fine too. I’m only allergic to sheep, other animal fiber is fine. For myself I prefer dark colours – black, grey, purple, dark red, jewel tones, but I knit a lot for other people, so all colours except pastels and pink are welcome

What is the essential item for your crafting toolkit? Do you lose your yarn needles? Do you need more needles/hooks? Crochet hooks that are not the cheap metal ones in all sizes, tapestry needles, something to put the needles in, can never have too many tape measures

For knit/crocheted things, simple or complex? if you make it – whatever you prefer. If I have to make it – knitting complex lace takes me forever, so I might not finish it, but crochet lace is fine, don’t mind complex there.

Everything else is up to you, dear spoiler – my future steampunk outfit will have a long skirt, but does so far only have an underskirt, no top one. As I was the one asking about it – the non-functional one I made looks pretty, it could still be used for writing, but the part you hold is decorated with polymer clay and isn’t comfortable to hold while writing… so for me, functional is what you can really use to write with (if the nib is removable and can be exchanged is a bonus, but no must) and non-functional is everything I can’t really use for writing or only with great difficulties

Dear Spoilee: I see you like spats. I do too. Of these four patterns, which tickles your fancy most? Spatz, Spatterdash, Steampunk Spats, or Ada Lovelace Spatz or Spatterdash – but Spatz only work with heels, so I might use Spatterdash more
If I were to make you an item (non-clothing) with pockets, what would you be most likely to put in those pockets? small things I need every day like chap stick, keys, wallet, tissues etc… if it is a costume item, they might hold some accessories, those little things that make the costume perfect – or hide the things I need that don’t fit in with the costume

Hey spoilee, way way way back in the beginning of this thread some 250 pages ago!! we talked about Steampunk Music. And the names Abney Park and Rasputina came up. Would you be adverse to such music showing up in your box in the form of CDs? What if the CDs came from a reliable second hand CD store? I would love anything from Abney Park, as I don’t have any of their CDs yet. Rasputina have some nice things and some I don’t like so much, I’d really prefer Abney Park. And second hand is fine for CDs as for everything else

Goggles? Fully Practical? Like you can wear them over your eyes and see clearly out both lenses. Semi Practical? Like you can wear over your eyes, but may only see out one lens, or there is something on the lens to semi obstruct view. Like this pair. Not Practical at all? Like you can wear them on your head or around your neck, they look really cool, but you cannot wear them over your eyes due to no visibility through the lenses. Like this pair or this pair I’d prefer fully or semi practical
Spoilee, you have some dietary restrictions/allergies that make me a bit unsure about buying you noms. When you go to the grocery store, what are some of the favourite snacks you’re likely to pick up? Don’t think that’s me… but I’ll answer anyway. I love chocolate and gummy candy in all varieties or crisps and pretzels for savoury snacks. Dried fruit and nuts are nice too, just no raisins or figs please. And I always like to try new things unless they contain fish or shellfish in any form – especially if it’s something I can’t easily access in Germany
How do you feel about exotic candies/treats? I ask because we have a huge Asian market nearby that I could plunder for gustatory delights if you’re adventurous about that sort of thing.I’m willing to try just about anything – but with savoury things be careful that there is not a single bit of fish, shellfish, shrimp paste etc in there. Allergies can be a pain
What do you think steampunky packaging is? no idea – I was looking for packing paper with a kind of Victorian pattern, but didn’t find any yet… brown paper and twine sound like a good idea though
3 small to medium things I’d love to receive stitch markers are always good, both for knitting or crochet… Buttons, love them, especially metal ones… bookmarks can be pretty and useful, I like that and never can find one when I need it. They seem to vanish around here. A certain small boy might be involved in the vanishing
My stalking skills have revealed that you are religious. Since steampunk lends itself to really cool religious items, would you be against such a thing? (ex: necklace w/ symbol, book or bag w/ symbol, etc) I’m sure that you are not my spoiler… because I’m not religious at all… but I don’t mind religious symbols as part of something, just not as the main focus
Dear Spoilee – Are you a tea drinker? And if so, are there any particular kinds of tea toys or kinds of teas that you’d like to see magically appear (or not appear) in your box? Yes, I love tea… just not green tea. My favourite is Earl Grey, but I like all kinds of blends, as well as fruit infusions or roibos tea. Fruit and roibos (or however you spell that) have the advantage that I can share them with the boy. Or would you think that’s a disadvantage, as I don’t get all of it?  There are not specific tea toys I’m lusting after, but would love to receive something of your chosing. Probably not another mug, I have way too many and might actually have to give some away as my cupboards are bursting

Dearest spoilee, I have a question regarding handspun. I’ve got one skein spun and another almost plied. I don’t own a ball winder, so can I leave these in skeins? Would you prefer me to wind it into a ball and give you yardage and fibre content? Or skip it, keep the yarn and just give you unspun fibre (you know, if you spin)? skeins are fine with me – but approximate yardage and fibre content would be great. Unspun fibre with no wool content would be fine too, but I’d prefer the yarn. Don’t have much time for spinning

Does anybody want a needle roll or project bag? Details would be nice. (and I have ideas for circulars, also) Something to hold my growing collection of KnitPick Harmony interchangeables including the cables would be perfect, I already have more than enough rolls for hooks and dpns. For circulars sounds intriguing too, or probably something that can hold a bit of everything for travel. As for project bags, I can never have too many of them, from smallish ones for socks up to big shawl projects.
